Down the hill, at the far Southern end of the rampart, the excavation in 1982 (right, looking SE with the big rampart cutting beyond) set out to investigate some hollows visible on the surface just inside the rampart. Much to our surprise, these turned out date to after the hillfort - a series of huts forming a settlement. We returned in 1986 (above, looking N along the rampart) to examine the spread to the north, up the hill. Several more well preserved huts were found, along with a makeshift entrance through the then-ruined rampart. It was thought at the time of digging that these dated to the post-Roman period (450-500AD), but recent new radiocarbon dates have shown them to be later Iron Age, maybe 150-200BC.
