The Neolithic areas in the highest point of the hill became the centre of attention in 1976. The aerial photo top right (looking W) shows the extent of the dig that year to find traces of settlement. Although these picked up ditch lines in S96/T97, this wasn’t the main settlement area. 1977 (right, looking S) tried a bit further East, to no avail. Finally in 1987-9 the excavation of the strip to the South, (above, looking W down to the Long Mound) just off the exposed hilltop, proved to be the centre of Neolithic settlement. 1991 (far right) was just filling in the gaps on the N side. Note the great view of a complete and to that point unexcavated Long Mound in the background of the 1976 picture.
