The Post-Roman Settlement

Down the hill, at the far Southern end of the rampart, the excavation in 1982 (right, looking SE with the big rampart cutting beyond) set out to investigate some hollows visible on the surface just inside the rampart. Much to our surprise, these turned out to be post-Roman in date, perhaps 450-500AD - a series of huts forming a settlement. We returned in 1986 (above, looking N along the rampart) to examine the spread to the north, up the hill. Several more well preserved huts were found, along with a makeshift entrance through the then-ruined rampart.
