The Long Mound - first major tranche, 1978-81

Following the 1977 examination of the SE end of the Mound, 1978 saw the first large scale opening of the monument (top left). This area had such complexity and depth of layers that the area was only finally completed after four seasons. 1980 (left) and 1981 (bottom left) show parts of the cutting close to completion, with numerous small features visible in the soft gull bedrock underneath the mound. It was here that traces of Neolithic houses, normally very rare, were plentiful along much of the Mound length. The vestiges of one can be seen just beyond the horizontal ranging pole as a dark patch with a stone scatter.
