This cutting is over a critical area of the Long Mound as it nears the Sacred Circle. The so-called ‘Special Area’ is in the middle towards the lower part of the cutting, well seen on Plan 4, which appears to mark the end of the Cairn beneath the Long Mound. A hearth is definitely involved.
