1971 saw the first trial excavations in the interior, and the obvious inner rampart ring was the main target. CI showed the very spectacular Neolithic continuous ditch with bank behind running N-S (see Plan 1). Completely unexpected was the earlier causewayed ditch under the bank (behind, and see Plans 2 and 3).
